What is a DePuy Synthes Attune® Knee Replacement?

The DePuy Synthes Attune® Knee Implant is intended for patients with a severely painful or disabled joint requiring a total knee replacement. Most patients who undergo knee replacement surgery, also referred to as knee arthroplasty, are between the ages of 50 and 80. A total knee replacement involves removing damaged cartilage by resurfacing the end of the thigh bone and the top of the lower leg bone where the bones join together. The procedure is intended to provide patients with greater mobility and reduced pain caused by joint trauma or degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

How Long Should My Total Knee Replacement Last?

According to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, most joint replacements should last patients at least 12 and up to 20 years. Due to defects reported with the Depuy Synthes Attune®Knee, failure is often reported to occur within two years of surgery.

What DePuy Attune® Knee Replacement Complications Have Been Reported?

In a 2017 study published in The Journal of Knee Surgery, physicians reported a high rate of early failure of the Attune® Knee Implant due to de-bonding. Specifically, reports revealed there to be a lack of adhesive on the baseplate of the device, which is attached to the top of the tibia bone. As a result of this defect, the knee replacement becomes unstable when any weight is put on the joint.
